The 405 Aired Dec 31st, 2025

OK Solberg:

I wanna again welcome you to The 04:05 Coffee Break. Guys, it's the last day of the year. Get your cup of coffee, glass iced tea, bottle of water. What's your plans for tonight? Be safe. Let's see what's happening.

OK Solberg:

Spring wheat $5.51 a bushel. 550lb steer calf $4.08 to $4.15 on the top end. A butcher hog in Iowa 57ยข a pound, and a lamb that's fat weighing a 100lbs in Billings will fetch you $2.39 to $2.41.

OK Solberg:

But guys, there's more, much more. Okay. Bible verse right up front, not in the back, right up front. A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. Proverbs 15:1

OK Solberg:

Okay. Here's my question. Do you want a soft answer or a harsh word? I told you a 100 times not to put your elbows on the table. What were you raised in a barn?

OK Solberg:

Wipe that smart alecky smirk off your face and never be comfortable or have fun again in your life. What's it gonna be boy? Harsh or soft? I'm going with my instincts here and I'm gonna go with soft. I'm not sure but I'm pretty sure that's what you want too.

OK Solberg:

So today like yesterday we're going to be looking back again. Yesterday, we looked at 1964. Today, it's gonna be 1965. Front page article in the Phillips County newspaper recapping a few events that took place in '65, it says, unofficial figures from the files of the news indicate a drop in births at the local Malta hospital from the previous year. Babies born, births.

OK Solberg:

Thirty six boys and 27 girls were born locally during the year and two sets of twins, one set being a boy and a girl and the other twin girls. Now from the preceding year of 1964, there were 38 girls and 38 boys and one set of twins, a boy and a girl. Okay. Jump away from the quote and think about that. Think about that.

OK Solberg:

1965, there were 36 boys born and 27 girls. Well, let's see. 36 plus 27 equals 63. I hope to shout that's one child born in the Malta hospital every sixth day on the average. You understand what I'm saying here?

OK Solberg:

If a baby was born on Sunday then the next baby was born on the following Saturday. 1965 was a big year nationwide as well. Bloody Sunday, March seventh, peaceful civil rights marchers crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama were violently attacked by state troopers and deputies, this event shocked the nation and became a galvanizing moment in the movement for voters' rights.

OK Solberg:

Also Selma to Montgomery, the March 1965, after the violence of Bloody Sunday, Martin Luther junior, King junior, and thousands of activists completed the march from Selma to Montgomery Pressing for voting rights. Now like Paul Harvey used to say, but wash your ears out with this.

OK Solberg:

On 08/15/1965, the Beatles performed at Shea Stadium in New York City before a crowd of roughly 55,600 fans, the largest rock concert audience in history to that date. Now listen to this. The Houston Colt 45's adopted the name Houston Astros and moved to the Astrodome becoming the 1st team to play indoors. Also in '65, the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Minnesota Twins 4 games to 3 to win the World Series. Game 7 pitcher for the Dodgers was Sandy Koufax who pitched a shutout.

OK Solberg:

You remember hearing about Sandy. Remember, in 1969, there was in 1965, there was not yet a Super Bowl for foot football. That didn't begin until after the 1966 regular season and the 1st Super Bowl wasn't played until 01/15/1967. Now, in the Academy Awards, My Fair Lady dominated with 8 Oscars including best picture. Mary Poppins also won multiple awards.

OK Solberg:

Oh, PS. Remember, we heard those movies yesterday because they came out in 1964. Movies that were big in 1965 were The Sound of Music for a few dollars more with Clint Eastwood and doctor Zhivago. On the top pop chart, we we see Woolie Woolie by Sam, the Sham, and the Pharaohs. I can't get no satisfaction by the Rolling Stones and this beautiful melody Downtown by Petulia Clark.

OK Solberg:

Roger Miller had a big hit with King of the Road. You remember that one? Third boxcar midnight train, destination Banger Maine, all worn out suit and shoes. I don't pay no union dues. Oh, closer to home in 1965, I was the ring bearer for my uncle Sid Solberg's wedding when he married a delightful girl from Chinook, Montana named Mary Mae.

OK Solberg:

And finally, the Pillsbury Doughboy debuted for the 1st time. The beloved Pillsbury Doughboy Poppin Fresh was born bringing cartoon charm to the grocery aisle. Also in 1965, it was the first time listen now. It was the first time a swear word was used on prime time television and it happened on My Favorite Martian.

OK Solberg:

And what was the swear word? And the password is Darn. I don't have time to mention the formation of the Monkeys or that I Dream a Genie began and there certainly isn't time to mention that it was the first year health warnings appeared on a pack of cigarettes.

OK Solberg:

Happy New Year. Fun to have fun looking back. So until next time, as you go out there, remember now, don't be bitter.
