The 405 Aired Dec 30th, 2025
Want to again welcome you out of The 04:05 Coffee Break. Guys, get your cup of coffee, glass iced tea, bottle of water, hot mug of cocoa. Let's see what's happening.
OK Solberg:Spring wheat let's see where did I put the price $5.59 a bushel. Like I told you yesterday, a 550lb steer calf not moving right now, so I couldn't get you a quote. But I'll tell you what a 3 year old 3 year old bred cow at the top end will bring $4,500, I hope to shout! And a butcher hog in Iowa down from last week at 56¢ a pound and a 100lb fat lamb in billing at $2.41 a pound. But, guys, there's more, much more.
OK Solberg:Backward, turn Bbackward in the time in your flight. Make me a child again just for tonight. So today, we go back to the year, dun dun dun dun, 1964. Now I know for a fact that there are youngsters out there that weren't even born. Fact is, maybe your parents weren't even born. But history is good for all of us. So the year is 1964.
OK Solberg:Before I get going, do you guys who were alive? What do you remember from the that time in your life? What do you remember back in 1964? I myself was seven years old.
OK Solberg:It was the 1st year I came to the Malta Public Schools. I was in 2nd grade in Missus Wilma Anderson's class, and it's where I first met Todd Smith. But what were you doing, back in 1964? First off, because I know there's so many baseball fans out there, have to mention the Saint Louis Cardinals defeated the New York Yankees in a dramatic 7 game world series at Busch Stadium to break down the Yankee dynasty.
OK Solberg:And if you were a movie lover and if you were a movie lover and you were alive back then, yeah, no. You gotta know the top three movies in 1964 were Mary Poppins, My Fair Lady, and James Bond fans remember well Goldfinger. Well, any teenager alive today will know that the Beatles had showed up on the Ed Sullivan Show, and I wanna hold your hand ranked high on the play chart for radio stations near and far. Now some of the Beach Boys fans laid their 409 record on the shelf and went down to the local music store and bought a new one titled I Get Around.
OK Solberg:Now if and you didn't dig that rock and roll, many of you were happily delighted when Buck Owens came out with together again. And any Buck Owens fan also would pay tribute to Johnny Cash when he came out with a signature song that was titled understand your man.
OK Solberg:In 1964, US involvement in Vietnam deepened significantly After the Gulf Of Tonkin Incident, congress passed the Gulf Of Tonkin resolution given LBJ broad authority to increase military action. Well, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was signed into law, outlawing segregation and discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. Lyndon Baines Johnson won a landslide presidential election defeating Barry Goldwater. And guys, before CNN and any of the 24 hour news networks came aboard, We watched Walter Cronkite and Chet Huntley and David Brinkley. And, of course, we didn't like to hear about more action in Vietnam.
OK Solberg:But, you know, we were also a little bit frightened when it was announced that China had tested its first atomic bomb. This, of course, shifted Cold War dynamics because we now knew other than The US, The Soviet Union, The United Kingdom, and France, China made the fifth one. But we allowed the adults to worry about that because us kids were grooving to the Beatles a hard day's night and can't buy me love. And we were totally taken with a group called the Animals. My dad always laughed at that.
OK Solberg:Yeah. He was gonna start up a group called the Magpies. But we were taken with a group called the Animals when they sang the House of the Rising Sun and it still stands as crystal clear and good today as it did back then. You know, we'd save up our dimes and nickels because there were so many good songs to buy down at the local music store like McCoy's Music or Ben Franklin. I'm sure there are people out there right now remembering when they went down in 1964 to purchase Roy Orbison's hit, Oh Pretty Woman.
OK Solberg:But remember, it wasn't always only rock and roll and teenage mania. We had those peer country music fans, and they couldn't get enough of Farr and Young's Hello Walls. And guys, did you know that song was written by Willie Nelson? Yep. That song was written by Willie Nelson before he was the Willie Nelson we know.
OK Solberg:It's true. Willie started as a songwriter and he's still alive. He's still alive today at 92 years young. Then to close it out, 1964. Let's bring it a little closer to home and on the front page of the Phillips County newspaper, I see a beautiful picture of a Hereford bull purchased purchased by Mr & Mrs J M Oxhart who you might recognize as Mitch and Leila Oxhart.
OK Solberg:And they purchased this bull for a whopping $900. See? They got the granddaddy of them all, the grand champion at the Hereford Breeders recent sale. And like Greg said when I visited with him, it was probably about belt buckle high. And that is true.
OK Solberg:I can see it on the front page. Cattle have changed a lot in the last sixty one years. Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations. Ask your father and he will show you, your elders and they will tell you. Deuteronomy 32:7
OK Solberg:So until next time, as you go out there, remember now, don't be bitter.
