Break coffee. Four zero five the to you. Welcome again to want I. Guessing if you were
O.K.:listening, I wanna again welcome you to the four zero five coffee break. Get you a cup of coffee, glass of iced tea, bottle of water.
O.K.:Let's see what's happening. Spring wheat, $5.96 a bushel. 550 pound steer calf. You can quote it from heart. It's in the $3.80 range, $3.86.
O.K.:Butcher hog in Omaha, Seventy Nine Cents a pound, and a hundred pound fat lamb in Billings at two dollars and sixteen cents a pound. But, guys, there's more, much more. Let's look back on an old Phillips County newspaper today. Yeah. I think I'll do that.
O.K.:Let's set the time machine to travel back. Let's see. Say about sixty one years ago to the year 1964. '19 '60 '4. Elsewhere in the world, some of the top hundred hits from 1964 include number one, I wanna hold your hand by the Beatles.
O.K.:But realize in 1964, the Beatles had nine songs in the top 100. Also, I get around by the Beach Boys. Oh, hey. Let's have a little trivia quiz. I'll tell you the hit from 1964, and you tell me the artist.
O.K.:Ready? Under the boardwalk. Next one. Glad all over. Dead man's curve.
O.K.:Don't let the rain come down. Uh-oh. No. Don't let the rain come down. Uh-oh.
O.K.:No. Don't let the rain come down. Uh-oh. No. Don't let the rain come down.
O.K.:My roof's got a hole in it, and I might drown. Next one, my boy lollipop. And finally, it rounded out who sang the song chug a log. That's the end. How'd you do?
O.K.:I'll give you the answers. Under the boardwalk was a chorus sung by the drifters. Glad all over, you could hear it. And if you had never heard it before, you'd think it was the Beatles. But, no, it wasn't.
O.K.:Glad all over the Dave Clark five. Dead man's curve was not sung by the Beach Boys. It was sung by Jan and Dean. Don't let the rain come down was the serendipity singers. My boy lollipop was Millie Small.
O.K.:And the one everyone got correct was Chugalug by Roger Miller. So still in our time machine, and the year is 1964 in Phillips County, Montana. In the December 31 edition, there is a recap of the year. It reads, for Phillips County, 19 60 4 was a year of building, a year of good crops despite below normal precipitation of prairie fires, blizzards, politics, marriages, births and deaths, civic enterprises, and plans for the future. In short, it was a normal year.
O.K.:Malta's street paving project was the largest single job during the year in Montana in Malta, sorry, Malta, Montana. That makes sense. Also, in 1964, a new telephone building, rest home, a new apartment house, the remodeling of the Montana power office, construction of a National Guard armory, and at least 10 new homes happened. In January, we find the resignation of Roy G. Monroe as president of the First State Bank.
O.K.:We see Sandra Nicholson as JC junior miss. Dodson captured the district three c basketball title, Dodson coyotes. In February, listen, guys, in February, we find a tiny baby girl was abandoned at the city hall. The Montana Centennial train made a visit to Malta in March. In June, we see Fred l Robinson retired as director of the First State Bank.
O.K.:Also in June, it was announced that governor Babcock was to speak to speak at the Phillips County Fair. Fast forward to August, we read, big crowds attended the fair, especially the day governor Babcock spoke, but someone set off a smoke bomb during the night show, which was annoying and practically broke up the performance. End of quote for now, I wanna find out what little girl was abandoned at the city hall, and I wanna find out who set the smoke bomb. Eddie and Gary Anderson of the Whitewater area walked off with a four h fat calf champion and reserve champion at the fair. And with the clock ticking and the time machine running low on gasoline, Let's close with news from December of nineteen sixty four.
O.K.:It reads, as for the month of December, it has been a cold month with perhaps a record breaker of a blizzard which resulted in many livestock losses. End of quote. Guys, how many of you remember that blizzard in 1964? That was the first year my father drove us to Malta in his school bus, and I remember seeing dead cattle in the fence corner about a mile east and south of Bud Styles' farm. Oh yes, it was a real stem winder.
O.K.:Remember the days of old. Consider the years of many generations. Ask your father, and he will show you your elders, and they will tell you. Deuteronomy thirty two seven. So until next time, tune in again tomorrow.
O.K.:We're gonna have a trivia quiz. As you go out there, remember now. Don't be bitter.
